about

After reading an article by Mary Colwill about the shocking decline in the population of curlews in UK and their seemingly irreversible fall towards extinction, I was moved to write this song about the loss of many of our farmland birds in general, via the old legend of The Seven Whistlers. The legend states that anyone who hears the ghostly cries of these mysterious birds overnight will be doomed. In reality however, the opposite is the case, the loss of biodiversity and all that goes with it actually leading to our own extinction if we leave the preservation of our essential biodiversity too late.

lyrics

The curlew's cry foretells our doom, it serenades us to our tomb,
Of seven whistlers, all have flown, the cruellest winds of fate have blown.

The Turtledove she sang our pain, the Skylark too is lost in vain,
Of seven whistlers, all have flown, the cruellest winds of fate have blown.

I search the farmland's empty sky, for sparrows chirp or lapwing's cry,
Of seven whistlers, all have flown, the cruellest winds of fate have blown.

The woodcock and the nightingale, their haunting calls the woods bewail,
Of seven whistlers, all have flown, the cruellest winds of fate have blown.

The curlew's cry foretells our doom, it serenades us to our tomb,
Of seven whistlers, all have flown, the cruellest winds of fate have blown.
